Children
and staff at the Valley
Primary School
in Oakamoor are delighted with our new school sign. The headteacher
invited a parent and local artist, Mr Ian Naylor, to replace the
existing fibreglass sign with something relevant to the school’s
history and ethos. One other request was - could the children be
involved. |

Design
workshops were held within the school, where the children talked and
drew with the artist on the design requirements. Our school’s
situation within a steep sided valley, the two school teams (oak and
sycamore), colour, history and materials were all taken into
consideration. Oak and copper were finally selected as being
appropriate materials because of our close association with the
history of both the school and village. |

Ian Naylor has lived in
Staffordshire Moorlands for 15 years, and combines a career as a
professional artist with figurative teaching on
Stafford
college’s visual arts course.
His work can be seen at the RAF Museum Cosford, and Cannock
Chase. A recent commission for Ian has been the huge computer
designed decorating the Moorland’s library van.
Due to be unveiled soon this year is his ‘flying’
contribution to the ‘Cheadle Trails’. |

The
headteacher, Val Slater said, ‘
Our individual sign illustrates how we are able to cater for such a
select number of children providing
an individual approach to learning catering for individual children.’
